Here is a new hard surface tutorial in which I use Blender 2.90 alpha and my free Jmesh tools addon to create a metallic hardsurface model.
To create the insets on the sides I use te new tools Extrude Dissolve and intersect, that you can use to push a face into a mesh.
The JMesh Tools addon can be downloaded here:
github.com/jayanam/jmesh-tools
and it works for Blender 2.90 as well.
