Old Blanco Courthouse, Blanco (2017)
Some buildings serve one purpose their whole life. The Old Blanco County Courthouse has had at least four. Built in 1886 by architect Frederick Ernst Ruffini in the Second Empire style, many consider it the finest example of that architecture anywhere in Texas.
It only served as an actual courthouse for four years before the county seat moved to Johnson City in 1890. After that it became a schoolhouse, then a hospital from 1937 to 1961, and eventually a museum and community gathering space. Somewhere along the way, the Coen brothers showed up and filmed the courtroom scenes for True Grit right inside these walls.
Walk through today and you're standing in a building that's outlived every job it was ever given. That's a pretty good definition of a Texas landmark.
