Attorney General Todd Blanche rejected the idea that the Justice Department should operate independently from the White House, saying he would consider President Donald Trump’s views when directing federal law enforcement.

“No, I’m not going to pledge that,” Blanche said Sunday on NBC News’s “Meet the Press” when asked whether he would pledge independence from the president.

Blanche, who was sworn in last week, said Trump would “never ask me to do something unethical or illegal.” His comments come amid concerns from lawmakers that the Justice Department could become politicized under the Trump administration.
