Night city, rain flashes across her luminous face with the kind of relentless oppression only reserved for noir and the sci-fi films that appropriate its nihilism. Blade Runner 2049' is the Best Cyberpunk Film Since. In the midst of a moonless, starless, and, yes, joyless Los Angeles night, the only glow in the sky emanates from her empty yet inviting olive eyes—a vacant visage that towers 150 feet above an abandoned urban purgatory. Her name is Joi and she is an illusion in every sense, right down to her holographic countenance made up of ones and zeroes. But in the world of Blade Runner 2049, nobody is perfect, and she is both the fantasy and reality of Ridley Scott’s haunted future made flesh.

The giant holographic billboard of a woman promising to be anything you want is impossible to miss, however early on in the film, before we meet the joy of K’s life, seeded in the periphery of frames are half-glimpsed proclamations of “Joi”. The on-the-nose word choice obviously echoes the creation of the Joi hologram. By implying that Rachael was just a device meant. The concept of love and joy are illusions grafted onto a cold and meaningless world. So too does Joe elsewhere lament the loss of Joi—who by this time has been utterly destroyed out of spite by Luv—by looking at Joi’s holographic billboard and realizing, perhaps for the first time, that she is programmed to refer to all men as “Joe.”

If Joi is just a product meant to subdue a depressed Joe, or even more simply obey his every wish and fantasy like the billboard says, she would not have requested he wipe her from the console before they go to Vegas to meet Deckard. If she stayed apart of the console.

An important metric, as a self-proclaimed cyberpunk, is that the film would be true to the essence of thegenre cyberpunk. Blade Runner 2049 more than simply displaying the trappings of cyberpunk aesthetics, is cyberpunk on the nose, but more than that, it is a matured and an evolved form of the genre cyberpunk. Visually, the movie is brought up to date, but not at the expense of narrative. The visuals are true to modern cyberpunk visual style, but also hold meaning within the story itself.

In this sci fi movie the story opens in 2049, thirty years after the events of the first film. An on-screen text states that the Tyrell Corporation has collapsed decades before, in the wake of violent revolts involving their Nexus-6 through -8 Replicants, forcing the company into bankruptcy. After the world's ecosystems collapsed in the mid 2020s, famine swept the Earth, killing millions. With his invention of synthetic farming, a wealthy businessman named Niander Wallace (Jared Leto) ended food shortages and acquired Tyrell's remaining assets to form his own corporation. The Wallace Company has reinvigorated the Replicant industry by mass producing the Nexus-9 Replicants, a new generation of artificial humans with modified behavior to make them more obedient than the older models. These Replicants have implanted memories and open-ended lifespans, and are still used for slave labor on the off-world colonies (the Moon, Mars, and the moons of Jupiter, Saturn, etc.), but some are also used as Blade Runner units, hunting down and "retiring" the few remaining older model Replicants that are still at large.
