Blade Dancer - Lineage of Light is a 3D Jrpg for the PSP, released in 2006. It was Developed by SEGA Hitmaker, and variously Published by UTV Ignition Games, Sony Interactive Entertainment, Nippon Ichi Software, and NIS America.
STORY: 14/20
You play as Lance, a outspoken kid who wants to be an adventurer so heads to the island of Foo to hone is skills. He is soon dragged into a battle between good and evil, and tasked with fighting the Dread Knight and his dark army to protect Foo and all it's citizens.
GRAPHICS: 14/20
Graphically, the game ain't too bad for a PSP game, is there better..? sure but what this game has is quite charming in an odd sense. The towns look nice and populated, spacious and quite large usually. Zones/Areas you explore and travel look nice but some do look a little bare and could have done with a bit more. Characters all look great, their models look fab as well as their character art that pops up when talking.
Monsters look okay, some better than other but that's to be expected, I mean the developers ARE working with limited space here. Cutscenes are nicely done, other than the one that plays and shows you gameplay if left alone at the start menu, that looks really bad and grainy unfortunately, I don't know why though because it don't look nothing like that in game.
SOUND: 12/20
The music OST is okay, it's nothing special and don't have anything that stands out from other RPGs so don't expect Final Fantasy level music. The game has plenty of sound effects for skills, moving, monsters, attacking, and so forth but one sound that's annoying as hell is the "can't select something" sound, man.. if your a button masher in battle this will do your nut in after a while. the game has some voice acting, most of which is not that great to be honest, and the main character's voice.. MY GOD! it's awful, really cocky, arrogant, and a complete jerk attitude.
GAMEPLAY: 16/20
You start at a town, you talk to the citizens, pick up some optional mini-quests, learn a few things about optional stuff.. like crafting, and set out to battle and advance the story. The game has a small learning curve at the beginning but once you understand what's happening then it's not bad at all. The game kind of reminds me of Final Fantasy XI (mmo).. maybe its the targeting system and the likeness of the first towns graphics, add in the crafting also and well yeah, it's VERY similar.
You run around areas where monsters are free roaming as skulls, you get chased by them or they run away depending on how strong you are but once hit by them you'll enter battle, so there's a way to dodge fights if you wish. Upgrading your gear is done one of two ways, you either buy from the stores, or you can get some as drops, turn them into recipes and then craft them yourself. There's chest usually hidden around zones for you to collect, a lot of useful items can be got from then, like equipment and weapons.
As easy as the game is at the beginning expect there to be many challenges ahead, the game gets extremely tough towards the end and which results in you having to prepare ahead of time for exploration and such. You learn skills and magics as you level up and honestly, levelling is quite quick until you reach around 30+ then it starts to slow down a little, by 50+ its a crawl and grind for levels.
SYSTEMS: 16/20
The game has a durability system set on weapons, the idea behind this is to make more use of the crafting on offer. This game boasts one of the most comprehensive crafting systems i've ever seen, short of MMOs. You can turn any weapon, most armors, most accessories, and most normal items into crafting recipes (that you then learn) so you can make that item yourself. Crafting also has a chance of failure where you'll lose one or more of the items used to maker an item.
There's a system known as Luna, this is where when you get hit or attack a bar fills up where then you can use skills, and also triggers in battles, what ever is left it is added into an EXP pool at the end of battle. Monsters use this Luna bar so you need to think about what you're doing in battle, in a sense a tactical system within battles.
There's a few other systems in place that is the usual for most RPGs, INNS, shops, quests, etc.. the obvious one being a party system where you can use up to four characters in battle. The battles itself are a little weird at first but you soon get used to how it all works.
OVER ALL: 72/100
A lot of people hate on this game, but I feel it's not a bad game over all, though it does have some flaws. Do I recommend it? Sure if your looking for something different and offers an extensive crafting system.
