Blackberry season is one of nature's greatest gifts. Every summer the hedgerows overflow with food, medicine, and an invitation to reconnect with the wild.
Here are three of my favourite tricks for harvesting more berries with a lot less frustration:
🫐 1. The Hard-Nose Rake
Use a hard garden rake to gently pull the canes toward you so you can reach those berries that always seem just out of arm's reach.
🏄 2. The Surfboard Method
Lay an old surfboard, ladder, or sturdy plank across the blackberry patch. It lets you reach deep into the middle without getting shredded by thorns.
🦶 3. Sasquatch Feet
Put on sturdy boots and tough pants, then carefully stomp down the outer canes to create a pathway into the patch. Sometimes you've got to think like Sasquatch!
Blackberries remind me that abundance is often hiding just beyond a few prickles. They ask us to slow down, get our hands stained purple, and remember that some of the best food on Earth is still freely offered by the wild.
Every basket we gather is more than fruit, it's a relationship with the land, a moment of gratitude, and a chance to awaken the wild human that's still alive inside each of us.
Happy harvesting! 🫐🌿
