This song was written during the "Charleston" era of the roaring 20's. It's been written that the idea for this tune was inspired by the observance of black children in the South, imitating a cow stuck in the mud. The movement was put into dance steps and became very popular in it's day. The poor kids that came up with the original moves never received a cent for their "accidental" artistic creativity.
