America Through Black Eyes is a series featuring Dr. Ron Daniels, aka "The Professor," founder of the Institute of the Black World 21st Century (IBW21), examining American history through the experiences, struggles, and contributions of Black people.
In this episode, Dr. Daniels challenges some of the most common narratives about the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln, and Black patriotism. He explains why Lincoln's primary objective was preserving the Union, how the Emancipation Proclamation was shaped by military strategy, and why Black soldiers were instrumental in defeating the Confederacy and expanding American democracy.
Dr. Daniels also explores the significance of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, the rise and destruction of Reconstruction, and why reparations are rooted in historical precedent rather than political rhetoric. Most importantly, he makes the case that Black Americans have repeatedly fought to make the United States live up to its founding ideals even when those ideals did not initially include them.
