India’s electoral map could be heading for a major reset.
The NDA is reportedly examining whether elections in 22 states and Union Territories could be aligned with the 2029 Lok Sabha elections—potentially bringing forward the timeline for One Nation, One Election.
But making that happen would require several state governments to shorten their terms, in some cases by as much as three or four years. What happens when voters elect a government for five years, only to see its mandate cut short to fit a national election calendar?
In this video, we break down the two competing tracks for One Nation, One Election: the constitutional route that could bring simultaneous elections around 2034, and the political fast-track that could align 22 NDA-governed states with the 2029 Lok Sabha polls.
We also examine the arguments around federalism, accountability, election expenditure, EVM requirements, the Model Code of Conduct and whether simultaneous elections actually address the deeper problems in India’s electoral system.
