Over the years since the dawn of America’s war on drugs, the American government and leading nonprofit organizations and foundations have tried a variety of communications styles and approaches to influence young people and their parents to try and prevent teens from using marijuana. The results have been consistently ineffective. That being the case, I thought that this US government sponsored 30 second television spot designed to influence parents to talk with their children was an interesting idea. It just showed apparent in a child not talking to one another while riding home from school.
Personally, as my subscribers know, I do talk to my children and everyone else because I believe that silence is not golden when it comes to issues inside families and among friends and colleagues. The opposite is true. It is better to talk things out then to leave them silent. That’s my opinion and my experience.
When I was in school and when my wife and daughter were in school, high school was divided into two groups regarding drug use. One group avoided drugs like the plague. Another group or using marijuana and drinking alcohol from around 15 years old. One group saw itself as cool. The other group saw the “dopers” as dopey. From what I hear, that is still the case in high schools across America.
