The meaning of dreams is a divisive topic among the psych community. Some psychologists deem them meaningless, a result of random brain activity. Others find dreams to be symbolic, the unconscious source of our deepest fears and desires, a theory made popular by Sigmund Freud and staunchly defended by some modern-day experts. Freud also did a bunch of cocaine and thought you were sexually attracted to your parents, so take his beliefs with a grain of salt. Regardless of your view, reflecting on what one dreams can be a thought-provoking exercise if you’re fortunate enough to recall them upon waking.
For NY-based Markel Scott aka Bishop Nehru, dreams are what inspired Elevators; his latest album produced exclusively by Kaytranada and MF DOOM. For a dude who until last year wasn’t able to legally bar hop the LES, that kind of clout is remarkable. But Bishop is accustomed to the spotlight, blowing up at 16 with love from the media gatekeepers of hip-hop like Hot97 & Power 105 and attention from greats like Nas and the Wu-Tang Clan.
A torch-bearer of NYC’s boom-bap history and Rock With This' 3rd leg of an NYC Millennial-Rapper Relay Team, “Potassium” earns high marks across the board; it’s got spicy, braggadocio lyricism, clever wordplay, and a crisp funk sample from the 70’s by Doom (“Break Through” - The Funkees). Doom’s presence fits organically as Madlib’s production did on his Madvillainny album. Aiming for a rap Pet Sounds, Nehru’s self-proclaimed “grammy rap” is getting closer with each release.
