In the grey morning mist around Aston University, Birmingham’s towers loom like silent sentinels. Their austere faces are dulled by the damp air, and their outlines blur into one another, forming jagged silhouettes above the city. Somewhere between the drifting vapour and the echo of footsteps below, the buildings seem to lean closer, as though listening — or waiting.
