When I was in school, one of the things that my jazz teacher made me do was to take the same melody and find as many different ways as possible to play it. It made for a great exercise that really helped me build the connection between what my fingers are doing on the fretboard and what my ears are hearing.

For all y'all Deadheads out there, I thought the lick from the Grateful Dead's "Birdsong" would make a good opportunity to practice this kind of thing.
