Synthetic bio-based fibres are a more recent innovation and have great potential. This video explores the European textile industry and examines the key factors necessary to scale up the production of bio-based fibres.
They are cheap and offer textile features like elasticity and moisture control. But there is a downside, these fibres persist in the environment for years, creating serious pollution concerns. In contrast, bio-based fibres are largely biodegradable, renewable, and capture CO2.
In the EU alone, the bio-based textile sector employs nearly 700,000 people and creates 25 billion EUR in added value.
