Welcome to the Biosphere—the sphere of life!

The Biosphere includes all living things on Earth: animals, plants, fungi, and even tiny microbes. Life is everywhere—in oceans, forests, deserts, and even extreme places like hot springs and icy poles.

In the Biosphere, everything is connected. Plants grow in soil from the Geosphere, absorb water from the Hydrosphere, and use sunlight and air from the Atmosphere to make food through photosynthesis.

Animals eat plants or other animals, breathe the air, and drink water. Even tiny organisms help break down dead plants and animals, returning nutrients to the soil.

By studying the Biosphere, we learn how all life is linked and why it's important to protect our planet's ecosystems. After all, we're part of the Biosphere too!

In this video, we trace the complete reflex arc: the rapid pathway used by the nervous system to produce an automatic response to a potentially harmful stimulus. A withdrawal reflex protects the body by organising a response through the spinal cord, allowing the muscles to act before the brain has finished consciously processing what happened. The sequence begins when specialised sensory receptors in the skin detect intense heat. These receptors convert the stimulus into an electrical nerve impulse. That signal travels along an afferent, or sensory, neuron towards the central nervous system and enters the spinal cord. Inside the spinal cord, the sensory neuron communicates across a synapse with an interneuron, also called a relay neuron. The interneuron quickly passes the signal to an efferent, or motor, neuron. The motor neuron then carries the impulse away from the spinal cord to an effector. In this example, the effector is a skeletal muscle in the arm. When the impulse reaches the muscle, the muscle contracts and pulls the hand away from the hot surface. The pathway can be summarised as: Stimulus → receptor → sensory neuron → interneuron in the spinal cord → motor neuron → effector → response Each part has a specific role: • Stimulus: potentially damaging heat from the surface • Receptor: specialised sensory cells in the skin • Sensory neuron: carries the electrical impulse towards the spinal cord • Interneuron: links neurons within the spinal cord and rapidly relays the message • Motor neuron: carries the impulse from the spinal cord to the effector • Effector: the arm muscle that contracts • Response: the hand is withdrawn from the heat The brain has not been switched off or ignored. While the spinal cord coordinates the immediate movement, other signals travel upwards to the brain. The brain processes the location and intensity of the stimulus, and the heat and pain enter conscious awareness. This is why the hand may already be moving away by the time the person fully recognises that the surface is hot. A reflex action is rapid, automatic and involuntary. “Automatic” means the response does not need to be deliberately started, while “involuntary” means it is not initially controlled by a conscious choice. After the reflex begins, the brain can influence what happens next—for example, checking the skin, cooling the burn or deciding how to avoid the danger. Reflexes are valuable because every fraction of a second matters when tissue is at risk. Sending the signal through a short neural circuit in the spinal cord reduces reaction time and helps limit injury. The withdrawal reflex is also coordinated: muscles that pull the limb away are activated, while opposing muscles can be inhibited so they do not resist the movement. This organisation helps make the response fast and effective.
