When in 1965 the Vietnam War was rapidly escalating, many United States Servicemen considered the country and war an inevitable destination. Sergeant Charles Robert Jenkins was no different. He was stationed at the Demilitarized Zone between North- and South Korea. Yet, Charles did not feel much for waging war in Vietnam, and during one of his nightly patrols, he abandoned his platoon and took a leap into the unknown: he defected to North Korea... He would be a prisoner of the Hermit Kingdom for nearly four decades. What makes his story even more interesting is that he is one of the few U.S. Servicemen to actually leave the Communist dictatorship alive, albeit decades after his defection.
