Leon Todd recreates Billy Duffy's iconic "She Sells Sanctuary" tone (The Cult) on the Axe-Fx III in this week's Tuesday Tone Tip.
Billy is known for layering amps — a JC120, an AC30, and a Marshall or Friedman. Leon distils that into a stereo pair of Class A 30W "Brilliant" (AC30-style) models, panned hard left and right, with everything dialled to 7.
Preset details:
• Guitar & amps — a Gretsch Electromatic into a stereo AC30-style pair, hard L/R
• Free cab IR — low cut 80 Hz, high cut 6.5 kHz (grab it from Axe-Change or the link below)
• Chorus — the Japan CE (the JC120's own CE-1) in a wet/dry setup for a huge stereo wash
• Delays — two digital delays in series before the amp, 400 ms and 800 ms, for that driving Boss DD-2 echo
• Flanger — a Boss BF-2-style model for an extra layer of modulation character
• Double-tracking — a touch of pitch detune at the end of the chain
Leon's left a link to the preset below — you may need to tweak the gain and EQ to suit your guitar and setup.
What classic tone should Leon chase next? Let us know in the comments.
