I've described the origins to this tune Beelzebub, and the context and circumstances under which it was produced, elsewhere, on this YouTube channel so not much to add to this further description. Dave Brubeck's quartet with Joe Morello on tubs had been on my record player a lot in the late 70s. His group produced 'Jazz Goes to College (1954), and the title was re-purposed for a BBC TV Series called 'Rock Goes to College'.
The series was conceived by producer Mike Appleton as an innovative solution to budget constraints. Lacking the funds to rent traditional venues, the BBC offered colleges and universities a free concert by a popular touring act in exchange for the use of their campus halls and a lively student audience.The shows were notable for airing as "Sight & Sound" broadcasts—meaning the live audio was transmitted simultaneously on BBC Radio, allowing viewers to stereo their televisions with their radios for a high-quality listening experience.
So, it was Bruford's first gig, live, on national TV. We wobbled a bit, but the job got done. We seemed to have fewer chances to rehearse it to death in those days, and so plenty of ways to make mistakes, from which, as I say in this video, I learned pretty fast. It was a privilege and a pleasure to be working with Dave, Jeff, Allan and Annette, and I'm unlikely ever to forget it.
