I split the end of a giant cane stem into four parts, tied down the base with purple cordage, spread the prongs with separator sticks and tied them in place. This tool works extremely well to safely remove thorny prickly pear fruit from the Opuntia cactus. I filled my basket then cleaned the fruit by brushing them with grass and rinsing in water. Then I took the basket of fruit back to my hut where I pressed them one at a time between two flat rocks. I used a rush basket with a bunch of yucca fibers in the bottom to filter the juice and remove seeds and pulp. I filled the clay pot with juice then stripped down some giant cane stems to weave a sturdy shelf that I hung from the roof of my hut above the fire. I placed the remaining prickly pear skins and pulp on the shelf so it could dry. The sun had set and I ended the night by sipping from my pot of delicious prickly pear juice.
