At the Durban Container Terminal, our colleagues from Liebherr Africa recently completed the handover of nine new hybrid RTG cranes to our customer Transnet Port Terminals @Transnet-tptNet. This delivery marks an important milestone for the terminal and reflects our close and long-standing cooperation with Transnet.
The cranes are now operating at Pier 1, a key part of the wider Port of Durban. As one of the largest and busiest ports in Africa, it plays a vital role in connecting the continent and major trade routes to Asia and Europe. Pier 1 handles around 700,000 TEU per year and supports a continuous flow of regional and international cargo.
Our hybrid 6/5/4 RTG cranes – capable of stacking containers five high, spanning six containers wide plus truck lane, and featuring four wheels per corner – help the terminal manage these volumes with confidence. Their efficient hybrid drive supports reliable daily operation and contributes to a steady and controlled movement of containers across the yard.
We continue to support our customer throughout the entire equipment lifecycle. Our colleagues from Liebherr Africa provide training, service and operational assistance directly at the terminal, ensuring dependable performance over many years. We are also expanding our presence in Durban with a new competence and distribution centre as well as a technology campus. These investments strengthen our local service capabilities and reinforce our commitmend to long-term customer support in the region.
