Why is there such a critical need for mentors right now, and why are male mentors especially important?
Right now, we have young people who are simply waiting for someone to consistently show up for them, and men are one of the groups we especially need stepping into that role. You don't have to be a superhero or have all the answers to be a Big. For many boys, just having a man who consistently listens, encourages them, shows up, and models how to navigate life can make a tremendous difference.
What does a typical young person served by Big Brothers Big Sisters look like?
There really isn't one "typical" Little. Some of our kids are outgoing, some are quiet. Some may need a little more confidence or support in school, while others are doing well but could benefit from more exposure, encouragement, and another trusted adult in their corner. These are young people with tremendous potential who can benefit from someone who listens, celebrates their wins, helps them think through decisions, and exposes them to possibilities they may not have seen before.
How can local businesses help get more young people off the waitlist?
Businesses can be a huge part of the solution, and it doesn't always have to start with writing a check. Companies can encourage employees to become Bigs, give them some flexibility to mentor during the workday, host a Big for a Day or employee volunteer opportunity, or invest directly in our programs. And there's a benefit for employees too—mentors report stronger leadership skills, greater engagement, more empathy, and stronger community connections. So investing in mentorship strengthens young people, employees, our community, and ultimately Acadiana's future workforce.
