Jake Cunningham, known often as Chaotrope, is an award-winning professional composer. He's known for releasing a bunch of notoriously difficult songs to the Rock Band Network. Many of the most difficult charts on that game (and countless hours of FC attempts) were due to this one individual. At times, his music was even considered to be "too hard for the sake of being hard."
However, I was always inspired and fascinated by his compositions and always wanted to create something derived from his music, but wasn't skilled enough at the time to create my own fresh spin. Years later, here we are. His melodies and rhythms are very catchy and replayable, and I hope that by upgrading many of his songs to real instruments, more people can appreciate the music we got out of the Rock Band Network years ago.
I deliberately chose to only include songs released on the Rock Band Network. This leaves out a lot of great material (for example, my favorite album of his is Broken Story, though none of those songs appeared on Rock Band), but considering this video turned out to be 25 minutes long, I think I was alright to leave a few songs out.
Thanks to Chaotrope for the music he's given us all these years, and I hope everyone enjoys this new take on his music. Welcome to Chaotropic.

We're back. I don't plan to play this game nearly as aggressively as the past, but this was a nice first FC to come back to. And really, this FC is unlike anything I've ever done before. Constant 2-foot coordination between the pads, often called "linears", is something I've never really done before. This took one session, with six outro chokes close in succession before grabbing the FC.
I plan to try the whole RB3 disc setlist at 150% speed. I certainly won't be able to FC all of them (ahem... Caught in a Mosh, Beast and the Harlot) but I think I can do most. Follow the stream if you're interested!
This is the Rock Band version of my song, "Soulless: Generations" - my take on ExileLord's Soulless series. This version of the chart has separate guitar and (pro) keys charts intended for an optimal full band experience.
I thought it would be fun to display the relevant section(s) that I used from the original Soulless songs to compose these new sections. Some sections are very obvious, while others are very loosely inspired.
This is the Clone Hero version of my song, "Soulless: Generations" - my take on ExileLord's Soulless series. This version of the chart combines the best of the guitar and keys charts found in the Rock Band version to create a more consistently challenging experience on guitar. Drums and bass are also included in this version.

Welcome to "Soulless: Generations" - my take on the Soulless songs that have dominated the Guitar Hero scene for well over a decade.
The original "Soulless" was released over 15 years ago. That song was written with only a few synths, and is widely regarded as the least polished song of the series. But as time went on, ExileLord (the composer) found his footing and released some mammoth sequels to the song, ending with the 17-minute "Soulless 5". It was a challenge to bring all five of these songs together in a representative way that sounded like a fresh and coherent piece of music.
This piece is primarily orchestral rock - though we explore many other genres of music throughout the piece including pure orchestra, classical, jazz, and even electronic. The orchestra glues the piece together as it travels through various movements. Many transitions are smooth, but some are intentionally jolting - reflecting the often unpredictable nature of the Soulless series.
Since the release of the original "Soulless", an entirely new generation of rhythm gamers have entered the scene. People who were not active in the scene during the rhythm gaming boom of the late 2000s have now joined in and brought these games back to life. If you fall into that category, I recommend taking a dive into the depths of YouTube and watching some of the very old playthroughs of these songs. It was quite a different community back then!
Conceptions for this piece began five (!) years ago. I had many sections mapped out in my head, and even made a few demo recordings. But these were never released, and I ended up putting this piece on the backburner for quite a few years. Though in retrospect, this decision significantly improved the final product. My compositional skills have grown in the past five years, and technology has swiftly advanced. This piece would not be possible without the recently developed SWAM Audio Modeling software, which physically models almost every relevant orchestral instrument in the winds, brass, and strings families. The technology is astounding. Gone are the days of gigabytes of pre-recorded samples; this software synthesizes every instrument in real time, and I'd like to think that these orchestral instruments sound very, very close to the real thing. For more information on the SWAM orchestral virtual instruments, visit their website here: audiomodeling.com

I made the deliberate choice to keep the integrity of the guitar chart as close as I could to the original Chaotrope charts, even when I did not play quite as many notes as the original songs. On the other hand, the keys/pro keys is very accurate to my playing.
For those who would like an extra challenge, you may choose to play the "Ultimate" version of this song, which combines the best of both guitar and keys into one chart. For Rock Band players, download the "Ultimate" file and choose Guitar. For Clone Hero players, choose Guitar to play the "Ultimate" chart, or Coop to play the regular guitar chart.

On April 27, 2019, I held my first major performance of my progressive rock album. This performance took place at a concert hall in the university I'm currently studying at, the University of California, Santa Barbara.
This project was a very rewarding experience. From September of 2018 through April of 2019, I worked with many talented musicians in my university and taught them the whole album. This album wasn't originally intended to ever be performed live, and so I had to make many decisions regarding how to divide the keyboard parts, what extra musicians I may like to have, and how to most easily teach people some very complicated parts.
The performance was far from perfect. All of us, including myself, made some small mistakes throughout the show. However, to play this album in full as a bunch of college kids (most of us who aren't even part of any other music program) has been an experience that I'm very proud of. I've learned a lot when to comes to leading a group of musicians in an intense ensemble setting.

The shorter roll with the yellow-blue fill directly before it is extremely difficult, because the roll is an odd (9) number of notes, and thus double stroking it is not exactly the way to do it. I was so surprised when I got this; it was my first time reaching the guitar solo. No lane chokes at all. For those who don't know what "Performance Mode" is, it's a feature in Rock Band 3 that basically turns off the chart, so you have to memorize what you're playing instead. It's kinda of like "Brutal Mode" in Rock Band 4, except you don't see the notes AT ALL, not just for a little bit.
Since Rock Band 4 doesn't actually have Performance Mode, I simulated it myself by turning off the TV screen. This was SO DIFFICULT to learn. Here's the thing: on brutal mode I FCed in one try. You don't have to actually remember any of the very minor changes in the chart. On brutal mode, you can watch for the changes and FC the song. And since the engine is a lot looser in Rock Band 4 than Rock Band 3, there really isn't much to the chart as long as you have the stamina to play it. But on performance mode, it's a whole different deal.
I made a Google Sheet to actually help me learn this, because I felt it was necessary. Note that this link doesn't actually tell everything about the song - I only took note of the easy parts to remember. There's a lot more that I had to remember than what's on the sheet, but I'll link it anyways so you get an idea of what I had to remember. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1B99I_GsyfgVQorF1rSloIpFGHfXhBfA7T5W8591GbH8/edit#gid=0
Also note that I didn't use pro drums (with cymbals) because it simply would have been too much for me haha. Maybe another day. I did FC brutal on pro on my first run ever though, I think Kyle did it in one or two tries as well. Here's a link to Kyle's brutal FC because why not: youtube.com/watch?v=DduIYV78b0c
