While perhaps slightly light on SF books, (only 2) each book I read made me think and reflect long after I closed the last page. On the SF side, I finally read Alastair Reynolds' Revelation Space and Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let me Go. Stephen King makes a long overdue appearance with Salem's Lot. Cormac McCarty's novel in dramatic form, Sunset Limited was a nihilist's wet dream of a read. Last (but most) I read Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye. It was an uncomfortable, gut Power-Punch of a book, as it shocked me, made me gasp, and ultimately was the best book of July. How a Book goes from Good to Bad. Starter Villain by John Scalzi, book review. Barts Book Space 2023-11-09 | Reading Starter Villain by John Scalzi was like Eating Cake for Dinner, thanks @vintagesf for the analogy. It was good while consuming it, but it left me intellectually malnourished...So, this is my experience with Starter Villain. It’s a super easy read and a fun, if silly, book. But, having finished it I was struck with a thought that my time spent reading it was no better than if I scrolled through TicTok for three hours. I guess not every book needs to have a meaningful message that will stay with you, but still, something was lacking here. Books as pure escapism, and fun but with no literary merit or ideas. What do you think?
