The pursuit of hypersonic flight in the mid-twentieth century represented one of the most daring engineering endeavors in aviation history. Developed jointly by the United States Air Force, NASA, and North American Aviation, the X-15 program was conceived to explore flight regimes far beyond Mach 3 and penetrate the upper reaches of Earth's atmosphere. The restored and colorized archival film presented here brings this pivotal era into sharp clarity, displaying the meticulous technological progression that made spaceflight in a winged aircraft possible.

The conceptual origins of the X-15 trace back to early calculations regarding high-thrust rocket power, where engineers sought to construct a piloted aircraft capable of withstanding the extreme friction temperatures generated at hypersonic velocities. Unlike traditional aluminum airframes, which soften under thermal pressure, the X-15 was constructed using a specialized nickel-chromium alloy known as Inconel-X. This material allowed the outer skin to structural integrity up to 1,600 degrees Fahrenheit. Powering this vehicle was the XLR99 rocket engine, fueled by liquid ammonia and liquid oxygen, generating 57,000 pounds of throttleable thrust.

Carried aloft under the wing of a modified B-52 mothership, the X-15 was drop-launched over the Mojave Desert at 45,000 feet. Upon ignition, pilots experienced acceleration that pushed them back into their seats as the aircraft climbed in a ballistic arc toward the edge of space. At extreme altitudes where conventional aerodynamic control surfaces were useless in the thin air, the X-15 utilized hydrogen peroxide reaction control thrusters located on the nose and wingtips to manage attitude. On July 17, 1962, Major Bob White flew the aircraft to an altitude of 59.6 miles, officially crossing the boundary into space and earning astronaut wings in a winged vehicle.

Subsequent test flights pushed the speed envelope even further. To reach maximum speed, the second X-15 was modified into the X-15A-2, featuring external propellant tanks and a spray-on ablative coating designed to burn away and dissipate heat. On October 3, 1967, Pete Knight achieved Mach 6.7—a speed of 4,520 miles per hour—setting an unofficial absolute speed record for winged aircraft that endures to this day. Through 199 completed flights, the program yielded vital aerodynamic, structural, and thermal data that directly informed the development of the Space Shuttle and future spacecraft re-entry systems.
