Let's have a difficult conversation about Lindsay Clancy. Not a graphic one. Not an exploitative one. And not one where I'm going to tell you what you have to believe.

In fact, I'm becoming increasingly convinced that "What should happen to Lindsay Clancy?" may not even be the most important question this case is asking us.

What does justice mean when the loss cannot possibly be repaired?

What happens when the organ responsible for judgment, perception and decision-making may itself be malfunctioning?

Why are we so comfortable recognizing catastrophic failures of the heart, lungs or electrical activity of the brain, yet so uncomfortable with the possibility that the machinery responsible for our experience of reality can catastrophically fail too?

If punishment cannot bring Cora, Dawson, and Callan back, what can we do in their names?

We'll talk about postpartum psychiatric illness and its impact on the entire family system, the fear of what happens if Lindsay is someday considered well enough for release, and the uncomfortable question of who should make that decision.

Whatever you believe should happen to Lindsay Clancy, scores of people are being asked to walk back through hell to get us there: family members, first responders, medical professionals, witnesses, jurors and an entire community.

Is that unavoidable?
Is it justice?
Or is there a better way?

And perhaps most importantly, instead of asking only how society should punish an incomprehensible tragedy, can we ask what the tragedy is trying to teach us?

Because we cannot make this right.
But maybe we can make it count.
