It's that time of year again! Everyone is talking about toxic squash. Let's break through the hysteria and talk about whether your pumpkin will poison you, whether you've got killed courgettes in your garden.
Rule #1 IF IT'S BITTER, IT'S NOT DINNER
toxic cucurbits are very bitter. If your melon or cucumber or Squash tastes bad, don't eat it.
Toxic Squash syndrome can be caused by growing out the seeds of random volunteer cucurbits or cross-pollinated seeds that express wild-type tendencies tj produce more cucurbitacin.
OR
Hot dry weather and insufficient watering in your garden can stress cucurbits and encourage them to produce more cucurbitacin.
