Between East and West – a ten-episode webinar series featuring the world-renowned Jerusalem Orchestra East & West, In collaboration with the Koschitzky Centre for Jewish Studies and the Department of Music at the School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design at York University, Toronto, Canada, and with the support of the Azrieli Foundation. Viewers are invited to enter the fascinating world of the orchestra and its unique work, combining classical traditions of music from the Middle East with the conventions of Western classical music through enlightening explanations and immersive performances with guest artists.
Episode 2 (of 2): The Music of Moroccan Jews
A unique branch of Chaabi (traditional folk music) emerged in Morocco – Shgouri. Shgouri is the folk music of Moroccan Jews and became one of the most celebrated and significant genres of Moroccan music in the 20th century. In this episode, we keep exploring this style through the artistic work of two musicians: Slimane Elmaghribi and Albert Suissa.

במרוקו התפתח ענף מיוחד מתוך מוזיקת השעבי (המוזיקה העממית) - שגורי. השגורי הוא המוזיקה העממית של יהודי מרוקו, והוא הפך לאחד הענפים המפוארים והחשובים של המוזיקה המרוקאית במאה ה-20. בפרק הזה נמשיך ונכיר את הסגנון דרך עבודתם האמנותית של שני מוזיקאים: סלימאן אלמגריבי ואלברט סוויסה.
