When the engine starts the meter always displays the RPM and when the engine is turned off it then displays the total hours. When you turn off the meter it automatically turns back on once the engine is restarted so it always maintains the total hours and maintenance countdown timer. The meter total hours will always be displayed unless you turn the unit off extending the battery life.
