The BESITOS documentary highlights the stories of five Latino teachers in Kansas and their personal journey to becoming powerful educators. Their work in education has not only changed their families lives but is shaping the lives of hundreds of students who are following after them.
The BESITOS program (Herrera, Morales, Holmes, & Terry, 2011) served as a gateway to higher education for more than 200 students at Kansas State University. At the heart of the program’s purpose were opportunities for students to explore their own identities, as grounded in their communities and the public schools they attended. BESITOS works to recruit bilingual and culturally diverse participants who speak the low incidence languages of English language learner (ELL) student populations, and place these recruits in the field of Secondary or Elementary Education.
