FAQ

Q: What does the display mean?
A: This display uses several techniques to show details of the music and its performance. Colors are assigned according to pitch, in a system I call "harmonic coloring" (which you can read more about here ... musanim.com/HarmonicColoring ). The display at the top shows the measures numbers and the position of the eighth-note (quaver) beats; in the future, these are spaced equally; in the past, they're spaced according to the timing of Hamelin's performance. The alternating background shading indicates sections of the piece (as described in Bill G. Evans' 1962 Master's thesis). The shapes and behaviors of the note markers indicate:
() notes that move chromatically
() notes that move by major third
() notes that move by relatively small intervals (or not at all)
() notes that move by relatively large intervals
() notes in the dotted rhythm
() triplet rhythm
() notes that move very quickly
() a prominent descending note pattern
() notes that move in "curly" pattern
() notes that move in bold, angular pattern
Because notes might belong to several categories (and because I'm lazy), these assignments are not 100% consistent; they're just meant to call attention to things you might want to notice.

Q: I'm hearing some strange artifacts in the audio ... ?
A: In the recording I used for this video, there was a lot of audience noise (coughs, clicks, bumps); I did my best to edit these out, but it's not always possible to do a perfect job using the tools I have, and my hearing isn't very good these days, so even when it sounds acceptable to me, people with better ears may still hear noises. My apologies.
