The great Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf appears to have been unknown in the Middle Ages. Nonetheless, thanks in large part to the scholarship of J.R.R. Tolkien, the poem has managed to gain acclaim as a grand epic (and not just a work of cultural studies).

I discuss that and several other significant features of this fascinating poem in this introductory lecture.
