Each installment of Ben's Tours takes you on a visit to a special place. This time, join me in the small Austrian town of Gusen for a stop at the Gusen Concentration Camp Memorial. A subcamp of the nearby Mauthausen concentration camp, Gusen was operated by the SS between May of 1940 until liberation in May of 1945. Home first to a granite quarry and later underground weapon manufacture, some 35,000 prisoners died at Gusen through a combination of forced labour, hunger, and execution.

Little remains of the camp today, except the memorial site in the middle of a private housing development.
