The Cincinnati Bengals have entered the final week of training camp with roster cuts looming, and several players are making late pushes for spots on the 53-man roster.
The Bengals got an early start on their decisions Monday by releasing veteran offensive lineman Cody Ford.
Mike Petraglia of CLNS Media told Local 12 sports anchor Yanni Tragellis that the move creates an opportunity for Jalen Rivers and Javon Foster to compete for the swing tackle role. Ford struggled in Saturday's preseason game against the Chicago Bears, committing two holding penalties and two false starts.
Petraglia believes Rivers has an advantage because of his versatility.
“I'm going to go with Jalen Rivers,” Petraglia said. “He's got a bit of a head start, but also because of his experience.”
Rivers played both guard and tackle at Miami and told Petraglia he even had some experience at center.
Josh Newton making a late push
One of the biggest roster questions is developing in Cincinnati's crowded secondary.
Cornerback Josh Newton recorded an interception for the third consecutive practice Monday, continuing a late surge after a quiet start to training camp.
“Right now I think Josh Newton is rising pretty quickly, but is it enough?” Petraglia said.
The problem for Newton is numbers. Cincinnati has Dax Hill and DJ Turner atop the depth chart while Ja'Sir Taylor and rookie Tacario Davis are also competing for spots.
“If Josh Newton keeps making plays, he at least makes the conversation difficult,” Petraglia said.
Landon Robinson keeps impressing
Rookie defensive tackle Landon Robinson has also emerged as one of Cincinnati's notable training camp performers.
The seventh-round pick out of Navy recorded 1½ sacks against Chicago and has impressed Petraglia with both his production and composure.
“Yes, he's a wrecking ball,” Petraglia said. “He does so many things well on the field that the coaching staff likes.”
Petraglia believes Robinson has moved beyond simply fighting for a roster spot and could push his way into Cincinnati's defensive line rotation.
The defensive front also received some good news Monday when B.J. Hill participated in team drills for the first time this training camp after dealing with an injury.
Petraglia expects Hill to remain an important part of a revamped interior defensive line featuring Dexter Lawrence and T.J. Slaton.
Dohnte Meyers closing in on roster spot?
At wide receiver, Dohnte Meyers continues to make perhaps the strongest case of any player who entered camp on the roster bubble.
Meyers worked with the first-team offense Monday, with Joe Burrow looking his way when he entered the lineup. Petraglia said Meyers has earned the trust of Cincinnati's quarterbacks and believes he is approaching lock status for the roster.
“It's very rare that you say somebody who was not on the radar is a lock going into the season,” Petraglia said. “I think Dohnte Meyers is pretty close to a lock.”
Petraglia projects Meyers among six Bengals receivers and believes the remaining battle could come down to Mitchell Tinsley and Charlie Jones. Meyers' ability to handle kickoff and punt returns could also strengthen his case.
The Bengals have less than a week remaining before the roster must be reduced to 53 players, making every remaining practice and the preseason finale increasingly important for players on the bubble.
