In 1776, Arnold built a makeshift naval fleet out of raw green timber to confront the British navy on Lake Champlain. While heavily outnumbered at the Battle of Valcour Island, the fleet inflicted severe damage and slipped away in the dark, delaying the British invasion and buying the Continental Army crucial time.
