Dear marriage supporter,
I had the chance to catch up again with Ben Dybowski, whose experience highlights critical concerns around free speech and the freedom to articulate mainstream views on marriage. Ben, a former teaching assistant at Bishop of Llandaff Church in Wales High School, was removed from his position after stating, within a staff-only “safe space” training session, his belief that marriage is exclusively between one man and one woman. This interview follows Ben’s recent loss at an employment tribunal, which controversially ruled that the school had the right to regulate the expression of such views. Ben describes how he was escorted off school premises and wrongly accused of safeguarding concerns solely for voicing his beliefs. Despite being fully cleared by the General Teaching Council, which found “no case to answer”, Ben’s dismissal was upheld at tribunal. Crucially, he reveals a disturbing attempt to further silence him, as the headteacher, who claimed to feel traumatised simply by Ben’s words, filed a violent action report against him without justification. Shockingly, Ben reveals there was also collusion with a member of the local authority who suggested reporting Ben to the Government’s anti-terrorism Prevent programme.
Ben emphasises that his views—“that true marriage is a union between a man and a woman”—are mainstream Christian convictions explicitly protected by law. The aggressive response to his simple expression of these beliefs raises significant questions about the state of free speech and tolerance today. He insists: “If someone stood up and said, ‘actually, I would have the same question’… the headmaster wouldn’t dare to sack three or four people.”
Ben’s case highlights a broader issue: how many others have faced similar injustices but felt too intimidated to speak out? And how many more are deterred from speaking altogether by observing how viciously others are treated by fragile bullies determined to silence any support for real marriage?
Ben has appealed the tribunal’s decision and is confident he will secure a legally binding precedent. Go for it, Ben!
