The Bell Miner, locally known as Bellbirds, is a fairly common bird of open forest and also the edges of Rain forest in Eastern Queensland, New South wales and Victoria. The Bell-like sounds literally fill the forest.
Bell miners live in large, complex, social groups. Within each group, there are subgroups consisting of several breeding pairs.
The non breeders help in providing food for the young in all the nests within the subgroup, even though they are not always closely related to them.
As I explain in this short film, they are a very dominant species and use a dive bombing method of setting up an exclusive territory. Some species are able to co-exist.
They do this in order to protect their territory from other insect-eating birds that would eat the lerps on which they feed. Whenever the local forests die back, due to increased lerp psyllid infestations, bell miners undergo a population boom.
They are closely related to the common and much maligned Noisy Miner which are also from the Honey-eater complex.
