One of the most underrated aspects of employee performance is confidence. If you can instill confidence in your team then you are going to have a much more high performing team. Now, you actually, as the leader, have an enormous amount of impact on how confident your team is. If you believe in your employees, then your employees are more apt to believe in themselves. When we talk about confidence, it affects a number of different aspects of their performance. When we talk about giving a presentation, for instance, if you’re insecure in giving a presentation versus confident, which are you going to perform better? Obviously, the one where you’re more confident as opposed to insecure. If you’re second guessing yourself all the time, if you’re not confident in moving forward then you’re going to be moving slower through all of the decision processes and work that you have to do. If you’re facing challenges and you’re doing those in a confident manner versus an unconfident manner, you’re going to be learning more, you’re going to go through those challenges much quicker and much more successfully if you move from a place of confidence. Lastly is simply being happier. If you’re confident, if you have that sense of self worth, if you have less stress in handling your job, then you’re going to be happier. When we talk about believing in your employees and instilling them with a sense of confidence we’re talking about hitting performance measures, speed on how fast they move through things, how quickly they learn things and how their overall morale is. So believing in your employees has a direct reflection on the overall performance of the team and then your own performance, of course. You want to expect the best out of your team. You want them to rise to the occasion whenever possible. You want to give them that rope, shall we say, to forge their own way. And what’s the worst that can happen? They make a mistake? I mean, don’t tell me you can’t fix those mistakes. Don’t tell me you haven’t fixed those already when they are working from an unconfident position. You have the ability to do that. It’s your job. So to get you started on this in believing your team more, what I want you to do is actually, in the interactions that you have with them, really focus on the successes in each task. If the task itself wasn’t a success, then you can go ahead and pick it apart a little bit and point to particular steps where they were successful. And then you address mistakes with learning. So focus on the successes wherever possible, address the mistakes with learning when they happen, and that’ll help you to actionably show that you believe in your team. When you do that, they’re going to go ahead and soar.
Thanks.
