“Being Big is All It Takes“ (Instrumental Version) from the episode “Growing Up is Hard to Do“ of "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” (S09E22).
--Overall Comments--
As we near the end of the season and series, Friendship is Magic sticks in one final episode for Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle, and Scootaloo. After not having a chaperone to take them to the fair, they wish that they could grow up now, and do so in front of a mysterious magical flower. You can probably guess what happens next!
A good chunk of music throughout the episode here for the CMC’s final outing. The biggest thing is (finally) another song for the season, the first one since the mid-season premiere! I was hoping we would have one final CMC song for the series, and this episode certainly delivers. It’s an insanely fun romp, and was great to hear the trio since one final time.
On the score side of things, we’re pretty much packed end-to-end. From a returning, very classic CMC synth theme, to another new montage track, to both some really spooky and action-pack scores, we certainly delve into many different moods on the BGM side of things.

--Track Specific Comments--
“Being Big is All It Takes” gives us one final song for the CMC trio, Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle, and Scootaloo, singing about how they thing they can now do anything being grown ups.
The song begins as more of a march, with the vocals and percussion being supported by a guitar and mandolin. The overall feeling is very fitting for the CMC, and harkens back to “Hearts Strong as Horses” in Season 4, which also happened to be writer Ed Valentine’s first episode.
After the first verse sung by all three, we move to the second verse sung by Scootaloo, with the percussion ditching the march beat, switching to something a little more groovy. The addition of an electric bass brings a little more flavor into the mix, while the guitar and mandolin remain.
From there, we enter our first run of the song’s chorus, sung by all three. The style of the song drifts to more of a funk groove, with the drums, and other instruments, mainly hitting on the downbeats, leading to a very deliberate pace. Saxophone are also bring some added flair to this section, really upping the groove feel of the chorus.
We next go to the next verse, sung by Sweetie Belle, and return to the rhythm of the previous, but with more instrumentation added, leading to a fuller sound. Piano is added to the instrumentation mix, with strings also adding some backing.
The second run of the chorus up next, this time adding in more brass and sax, upping the energy. I really love the groove that the chorus develops into here with the brass added.
Next, the song transitions into a bridge, who’s overall feel reminds me of the bridge from “Fit Right In” earlier in the season. The rhythm of the brass here matches closes to that from that song. A little bit of flute flourishes are added here as well.
The song ends with one more verse sung by all three CMC. The bass now has really upped the funky groove, with the mandolin playing a nice counter-melody. This goes to the song’s big finale, with the full brass being added in behind the beautiful vocal harmonies to end the song.
