A Critical Dragon | Being a Better Reader - A Short Exercise: Dialogue Creating Character and Setting @ACriticalDragon | Uploaded September 2023 | Updated October 2024, 6 hours ago.
When we read there is often the temptation to gloss over the subtext and subtextual clues that we are given in favour of surface level information. Yet this is something that I think is important in writing.
I infamously ramble on about things that I think are self-evident, for example the power of focalisation, characterisation that is implied through Point of View or dialogue, or how word choice can create character, and yet I know that people sometimes think I am overstating things, or over thinking things.
So I thought I would use a short experiment to hopefully make this a bit clearer.
These are four short, simple lines of dialogue, all conveying the same basic surface level meaning, but I believe create wildly different impressions of character, place, and setting in their subtext and how they convey the information.
I am curious about how well these come across.
