Ten years ago, the 16-year-old Taiwanese member of K-pop group TWICE, Tzuyu, uploaded a video crying and apologizing to China. All due to backlash from holding a Taiwanese flag on Korean television. But now, China seems keen to work with her. Tzuyu’s contract with her agency, JYP, is set to expire at the end of the year. Rumors say that, if she openly shows support for Beijing’s “One China” principle, the government will help open the doors for her to enter the Chinese entertainment industry. Let’s hear more.
Li Yuan
Minister of Culture
Artists are free to grow their careers wherever they please. But just a heads-up. Going to China comes with many preconditions and pro-unification propaganda. So be careful with that.
Lee Kun-cheng
Lawmaker (DPP)
Their intentions are crystal-clear. We Taiwanese people can see that this is part of China’s unification campaigns.
Tzuyu made a swift response to the rumors on Bubble, a paid messaging platform. In her message in Korean, she reached out to fans, saying that she was aware of the rumors. She also thanked them to be willing to wait until she meets them again with her new stage. She promised to work harder, and asked fans to cheer for her, saying that their support gave her enormous strength.
