May 2014 - Hitachi Rail Europe gives a glimpse of the progress on its construction site in Newton Aycliffe, where the train builder is investing £82 million into a state-of-the-art Rail Vehicle Manufacturing Facility. Delivered through partners Merchant Place Developments and Shepherd Construction, the County Durham plant will have a footprint of 43,000 sqm and initially produce the fleet of 122 Class 800 series trains for the Intercity Express Programme (IEP) for the Great Western Main Line and the East Coast Main Line. Construction of the factory started in December 2013 and in May 2014 the emerging steel structure outlines the size the building will eventually have.
