This week, I’m sharing three movements from the Sankofa Suite (A–C) — a twelve-movement poetic series exploring memory, liberation, and Pan-African connection.
Too often, the Sankofa bird is misunderstood as nostalgia — as if looking back is simply romanticizing the past. But Sankofa is not about longing. Sankofa is strategy. It is the deliberate act of returning to what we’ve lived through, so we can carry forward what we need to survive, rebuild, and rise.
These three movements include:
Sankofa Is a Verb — a meditation on action, choice, and what we decide to carry into the future.
What We Mean When We Say Pan-African — a reminder that Pan-Africanism is not a slogan or a border, but a living connection shaped by shared struggle and shared creativity.
Why Our Connections Still Matter — a declaration rooted in the present: the systems that fractured us still exist, and so must our resistance.
As we honor Black History Month, this work is a reminder that our history is not behind us — it is fuel. It is instruction. It is a map.
This is only the beginning of the Sankofa Suite. More movements are coming soon, alongside other poems that celebrate us.
