Watercolor is a beautiful and versatile medium, but it can be unforgiving if you don't understand how your brushes interact with your paper. This is a beginner's guide to the basics of using watercolor brushes and paper.
Watercolor paper is designed to absorb water without buckling or warping. It also has a tooth, or texture, that helps the paint adhere to the surface. There are many different types of watercolor paper available, so it's important to choose one that is appropriate for your level of experience and the type of painting you want to do. Mixed Media paper is also a great option if you are just beginning the medium, and want to experiement without dropping a lot of money for expensive materials (some watercolor paper can be quite expensive!).
Watercolor brushes come in a variety of shapes and sizes, each with its own purpose. Some brushes are designed for detail work, while others are better suited for washes. It's important to have a variety of brushes on hand so that you can choose the right one for the job. In my art, I prefer “crummy” brushes over brand-new ones, for the character and imperfections they add to the work. Whatever you decide, practicing with your brushes is important, as no two brushes are alike.
