Reviewing your work and knowing what is successful and what is not sustainable in bonsai creation is the final step after designing your first tree. In this episode of the beginner series, Ryan follows up with a critique on the pine our resident beginner Josh worked on alone during quarantine.

Realizing that bonsai is not easy, Josh shares with Ryan his pursuits of the new angle and front selection, branch elimination, defining branch selection, and apical formation. As Ryan always says, "let the tree lead the design" but, how is a beginner to know where the tree is leading them? Ryan points out Josh's various successes as well as his choices that cause some visual distraction that can be improved upon in the future. Josh found that creating an apex and a sense of movement using positive and negative space were some of the hardest aspects of his first styling alone.

With bonsai, as well as any bonsai practitioner, this is only the beginning of the path of evolution both Josh and his pine will take. Looking into the future, Josh and Ryan observe what more Josh can do to efficiently wire as well as create the impression of a coastal tree that he is drawn to.
