Today we have another lock from the bundle sent to me by a friend. This is a Falcon brand mortise cylinder. It is a five pin lock with nothing too crazy or troublesome inside. The bitting on the key, apart from the high lift is stack four, is somewhat disappointing, but that also makes it good for teaching and learning.
The only surprise or unexpected element to this lock was the milling on the top of the core plug. This over milling is found in some higher security locks, Goal brand comes to mind first. What the milling does is create a “pocket” between the core plug and bible. This “pocket” effectively hides the shear line of the lock and can lead to unfamiliar pickers over setting key pins or undersetting drivers. It can also diminish validity of jiggle testing to a degree, as can any underset trap, as the driver may be out of the core plug entirely while still not fully in the Bible.
