Let's talk about Māru-Gurjari Language.
Maru-Gurjari Language:
Māru-Gurjari, also known as Old Western Rajasthani, Old Rajasthani, Old Gujarati or Marubhasha, was an Old Western Indo-Aryan language that served as the common ancestor of the modern Rajasthani and Gujarati languages. Its name combines Maruve, an old term associated with the Rajasthani-speaking region mentioned during the time of the Jain monk Udyotana Suri, with Gurjara, referring to the Gurjara-Pratihara realm that once covered much of present-day Rajasthan, Malwa, and North Gujarat. The Italian linguist Luigi Pio Tessitori described it as Old Western Rajasthani, while Rajasthani scholars later popularized the names Marubhasha and Old Rajasthani, and Gujarati writers further promoted the term Māru-Gurjari and Old Gujarati.
Over time, several related languages and speech varieties emerged from these two languages, including Banjari/Lambani, Gojri of Gujjar-Bakarwal, Oadki, Savjiboli, Bhaya, Gurgula, Goaria, Sansi, Garasia, Kabutra, Baazigar and Ghera within the broader Rajasthani sphere, and Aer, Jandavra, Koli Kachi, Lisan ud-Dawat, Koli Parkari, Koli Wadiyara, Saurashtra, Vaghri Sindh, Ahirani/Khandeshi, and Vasava within the broader Gujarati sphere, while the Bhili languages continued to function as a transitional continuum between Rajasthani, Gujarati, and Marathi.
Historically, the language developed from Western Apabhramsha, itself descended from a blend of Shauraseni, Maharashtri, Avanti, Lati, and Aabhiri Prakrits, ultimately tracing back to Vedic Sanskrit. Māru-Gurjari supported a flourishing literary tradition, especially among Jain scholars who composed poetic genres such as phāgu, rāsa, and bārmāsī, while Charan & Bhat poets preserved heroic Dingal & Pingal bardic literature through oral & written performance. Around the 16th century, the linguistic continuum gradually separated into the distinct regional languages of Rajasthani and Gujarati, though they still share many grammatical features and vocabulary.
The language was commonly written in early Mahajani-related commercial scripts alongside regional Nagari-based systems.
