Allegro Films | Beethoven's Sonata No. 32, Op. 111, 1st Movement | Barenboim on Beethoven Series (11/13) @allegrofilms | Uploaded July 2022 | Updated October 2024, 50 minutes ago.
In 1970, conductor and pianist Daniel Barenboim and his close friend, filmmaker Christopher Nupen, collaborated on a thirteen-part series about Ludwig van Beethoven's music – marking the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the composer's birth. Lost to the British public for half a century, this series of films has never been shown together on national television in the UK. Now, as we celebrate the 250th anniversary in 2020, the episodes have been resurrected in their original form.

In Episode 11, Barenboim, having already taken us through middle-period Beethoven – the “Waldstein”, the "Appassionata”, and the "Eroica" – argues that the “unmistakable quality” of Beethoven's late works represents “a logical development of his whole life’s work.”

Music piece excerpts performed:
01:18 Ludwig van Beethoven - Sonata No. 32 in C minor, Op. 111 (1st Movement)
02:14 Ludwig van Beethoven - String Quartet No. 13, Op. 130 (Finale)

05:02 Ludwig van Beethoven - Cello Sonata in C major, Op. 102 (2nd Movement)
