A special treat to mark a special occasion: Fabian Müller performs a piano arrangement of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” from his famous Symphony No. 9 to mark the reopening of the Beethovenhalle in Bonn on December 16, 2025. This is the encore following the performance of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4.
The fact that we are sharing this gem today is linked to Europe Day on May 9th. The instrumental version of "Ode to Joy" from the fourth movement of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 (1823) serves as the European Anthem. It is intended to symbolize freedom, peace and solidarity within the EU. The anthem was first introduced by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in 1972, and in 1985 it was officially adopted by heads of state and government as the anthem of the European Community (later the European Union). It was deliberately left without lyrics to avoid privileging any single language.
