Veteran beekeeper, Glen Andresen shows us the 3 different beehive types: Langstroth Hive; Warré Hive; and Top-Bar Hive.

Andresen favors the Langstroth hive but as he says, it's more of a subjective decision. Some people prefer to see the bees in action and so the top-bar type offers that feature if desired and is generally suitable (within a fixed location) in backyard garden areas..

The Langstroth hives are heavier boxes with very good honey production and the design has been a successful hive model for more than a century.

The Warré hive is as heavy as the top bar but arranged in a vertical fashion with new boxes added from the bottom. This type is considered the most hand-off of the 3 but it does require adding additional boxes in the spring.
