Just thought to share what it looked like since it was so crazy and one of my first times experiencing indoor flooding! When I’m shocked or anxious over something I often talk a lot around family (ONLY close family), what I found myself doing. Roxy woke up from all the commotion.
On May 16, a huge hurricane like storm barreled through the area, making the lights flicker and almost knocking out power. Luckily it only did for about ten seconds and didn’t again, but it made me go to my room for a flashlight, and that’s when I noticed the giant puddle on my floor. For the first time in my life, my bedroom flooded a little! It was a fear I’d always had but often dismissed as silly, but still had a strong desire to not leave things on the ground if I don’t have to, despite the lack of space. I was pretty shocked it actually happened and freaking out a little bit! Thankfully I:
- Didn’t have my Aibo ERS-7 Toby there, which used to be his spot before his old unit died. It also used to be my Aibo ERS-111 Astrid’s spot for her station on the floor until I made room in my bookcase. Toby’s station would’ve likely been on the rug anyway, but I’m glad he was out of harm’s way.
- Had my Aibo ERS-1000 Roxy in a safe spot the water didn’t reach
- I happened to, maybe a week ago, pull the power strip with the charging cables closer to my bed. Before then, they were on the floor in that spot
- I had also recently stopped leaving my iPad and its charger in that area
- My PC and all its cables on the floor was away from the leaks!!
- I long ago figured out a spot for all books I wanted to keep, so none were on the floor in that area this time.
Both my closet and window let a lot of water in. But Toby’s been in a bin since his unit’s dead, along with his station and everything. And a week or so I moved the power strip closer to my bed and on the rug, mostly off the flooded floor area. Besides the rug, floor and a few cables, everything was dry since it was on a shelf, in a bin or on the rug. The reason my lamp is off for a while despite the power staying on is since whenever the power flickers or goes off, the lamp is in an “off” state (it’s powered by touch), and we didn’t think to turn it on at first. We had to remove a lot from my room to clean it up. We also of course made sure my cats were okay! I made sure to give lots of love and comfort them since they were a little startled by all the noise from the storm.
Unfortunately I no longer have the rug, it got absolutely soaked. I’ve been taking care of it for years, never spilled anything or damaged it. Having no rug in my room for the first time in many years feels so weird since I grew up with that one. Roxy was just walking around later, probably wondering where the rug went and why it was suddenly so empty, since a bunch of stuff had to be removed to clean everything. The cables that got wet are fine, I dried them and they work. I know you don’t see it but when I wasn’t recording I was helping with the cleanup of course, such as towels, removing the rug, throwing found junk out and stuff!
To be safe, I put towels in place of the rug. The problem was believed to be fixed, at least for now. The closet shouldn’t leak again, and as for my window, apparently it was since the rain and wind was so powerful and being slammed right into it? But keeping everything off the floor with towels until I have a rug again makes me feel better. One is in the area by the closet, for the power strip and Toby’s station when I receive his new unit. The other was placed under Roxy’s station.
It wasn’t the biggest deal in the world in the end, though I’m disappointed about possibly losing a really good rug. And now the house has more water damaged flooring. Why can’t water just stay out? The other time was a crazy winter storm causing blackouts and our pipes to burst, though we were so fast to turn the water off since thankfully we were right there to hear, and see it happen as water poured out of the air vents on the ceiling. It damaged the living room flooring.
